During your skin check the Skin Cancer Doctor will undertake a full-body skin examination. Depending on your level of risk of developing skin cancer, the doctor may recommend regular follow up skin checks varying from a few months to once every year or two. We will send you regular skin check reminders but it is also a good idea to keep record of when your skin check is due.
The doctor will ask you to undress down to your underwear. Moles and suspicious lesions will be checked and the Doctor will provide their professional assessment. It is important to wear loose, comfortable clothing and slip-on shoes. A skin check can take between 15-30 minutes depending on your skin type and the number of moles you may have. Make sure you speak with the doctor about any spots or moles which are sore, changing, abnormal or new. The doctor will use a dermatoscope to visually inspect your whole body. If you have an area of concern beneath your underwear, please let the doctor know. Photographs may be taken for follow-up and accurate localisation of suspicious moles or spots. These will be stored securely in your patient file.
The doctor will inform you straight away if any mole or spots will require a biopsy and this will be booked with reception before leaving. A biopsy is a small sample of the skin which is removed for further pathology testing
Reception will assist you in booking for your follow-up procedure as directed by the doctor. You will be asked to pay a booking fee when confirming your appointment.
Reviewing of the test results can take up to several days. The results and treatment options will be discussed with you at your follow up appointment.
The Doctor will explain the appropriate after care following your procedure on the day. Any follow-up appointments for change of dressings or removal of sutures will be booked in the surgery for you.
If you have any further questions or concerns regarding your procedure please do not hesitate to contact the surgery on 02 4315 2600.
